Surface Mount

Suggestions for the S-LS series loop

1.   Clean both sides of the loop and tail using a clean cotton rag and a good grade lacquer thinner, acetone, or 1,1,1, Trichlorethane.

2.   Wrap the loop and tail 100% with a good grade duct tape.  This will provide a release barrier between the loop and the more aggressive tape used to affix the loop to the surface.

Note: If reusing the loop is not an issue, then step #2 is not required.

3.   Apply mastic ( Part# AD-T 318 ) to the bottom of the loop.  Only remove the release sheet from one side of the mastic at this time.  Make sure that the tape is centered on the bottom when it is applied.

Note: Steps 1 & 2 may be completed off site.  However, the loops should remain flat (not  rolled   up) in transit to the job site.

4.   Locate the area for loop placement. Make sure the site is clean, free from any loose dirt and dust, and free of any moisture.  If the temperature is 40° F or below, the surface should be heated to dissipate any dampness that may be present.

Note: When selecting a location for loop placement, avoid areas of consistently hard braking, fast acceleration or hard turns.

5.   Remove the release sheet from the adhesive on the bottom of the loop and install in position. forcefully step on the entire loop and tail to insure a good bond between the loop and surface.

6.   Starting with the trailing edge of the sides perpendicular to the traffic flow, cover the loop with the 6’’ wide guard tape (Part # AD-T 615) centering the tape over the loop.  Allow for two inches of overhang on each corner.  Next, cover both sides allowing about one inch of overlap on the first section of tape installed.  Lastly, cover the leading edge and tail. (See Fig 3 for illustration) By installing the tape in this sequence, all the overlaps will be facing away from the flow of traffic. (see Fig 4 Detail)  Again, forcefully step on the entire loop and lead to insure a good bond between the loop, guard tape and surface.

Note:  If excessive wear is noticed in a given area of a loop’s guard tape, additional layers of tape may be applied as required.

Loop Removal

  1.  Using a razor knife, cut the guard tape at the intersection where the tape on the road meets the the loop. (See Fig. 2) Pry the loop from the surface with a flat shovel or a heavy duty scraper. If required, most of the residual mastic and guard tape may be scraped off the surface however, some residue will remain and will wear away over time.

  2.   If the release barrier of duct tape was applied, cut through the guard and duct tape on the sloping edges of the loop body on both sides. (See Fig. 2) Removing the duct tape will also remove the guard tape and any residual mastic remaining on the loop.

Special Note: Variations of this installation procedure may be employed depending on the length of service required in a high volume traffic environment. The mastic alone may be used or the guard tape by it self. In all cases, step #4 must be observed for any installation.
